WATCH TRAILER

Award-winning feature documentary about the Alabama populist governor, first elected in 1946, who tried to unite poor whites and poor blacks in a common cause. Folsom's two terms as governor were undone by the unstinting opposition of the press, Black Belt planters and the "big mules" of business; public hysteria over the 1954 Brown decision on school desegregation, and alcohol. Folsom would be succeeded by his former ally George C. Wallace practicing a different form of populism -- exploiting racial fears to gain power.
